Most rewriting starts before anyone writes. A draft comes back wrong because the brief never said who it was for, what question it answered, or what evidence it could stand on.
What a brief has to name
- The audience, specifically enough to exclude someone.
- The question they arrived with.
- The message — one sentence, not a theme.
- The evidence, with its source and date.
The test
If a reviewer has to explain the brand from scratch, the brief was not finished. Read it back and ask: could someone outside the team produce a usable first draft from this alone?
Long: “Our intelligent platform empowers ambitious teams to unlock the potential of their brand.” Clear: “Turn brand knowledge into stronger content.”
A brief that survives that test costs an hour. The rewrites it prevents cost considerably more.
